Yesterday, a Malaysian construction worker, Mr Soh Lip Tah, fell asleep while smoking.

The still-lit cigarette set his mattress on fire, causing him to suffer from severe burns, reported China Press.

The fire happened at Mr Soh's home in Muar yesterday morning.

At that time, the 32-year-old Mr Soh had been smoking while lying on a mattress in his living room.

It is believed that he had fallen asleep because he was too tired.

Neighbours said that some Indonesian workers from a nearby construction site noticed smoke was coming out from Mr Soh's home.

They broke open the door to help put out the fire.

They found Mr Soh lying unconscious on a burning mattress but managed to pull him to safety.

About $22,000 worth of goods and furniture were destroyed in the fire. Mr Soh suffered 75 per cent of burns.

Mr Soh's older brother, who lives nearby, arrived and rushed him to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.

Six firemen arrived at the scene 45 minutes after a call was received. By then the neighbours had put out the fire.

Another of Mr Soh's brothers, who owns an electronic store, told China Press that their house was used to store electronic goods, so it was full of such goods and furniture.

Every night, his youngest brother would look after his goods.

He estimated that the fire damaged RM50,000 ($22,000) worth of goods and furniture.

The family had another scare at the hospital.

When they took Mr Soh there, they found out that none of the hospitals in Muar has a department that treat burns. They were also told the hospital was full.

The family claimed they were told to call a hospital in Johor Bahru or elsewhere.

Out of desperation, they called their MPs to help convince the hospital to take Mr Soh in.

Doctors there confirmed that the burns were serious. Some 75 per cent of his body suffered burns.

A hospital spokesman told The Star that Mr Soh would be sent to a specialist hospital in Kuala Lumpur for treatment.
